ECHOCARDIOGRAM

Your doctor has scheduled you to have an Echocardiogram to assess the structure, function and blood flow of your heart.

The test will be performed in the Non-Invasive Cardiology Services department.

Explanation of Procedure

During the test, a small instrument called a transducer will send ultrasound waves through the portion of your body where it is applied, allowing the technologist to locate the structures within your heart and valves. Three electrodes will be placed on your chest so your heart rate can be monitored throughout the test. During the test, the transducer will be placed (sometimes with pressure) at several locations on your chest near your heart. You will be asked to lie on your left side for the majority of the test, although the technologist may ask you to change positions periodically.

The test will take approximately 45 –60 minutes.

Preparation for Procedure

1. There are no special dietary instructions or restrictions for this test.

2. You will need to undress from the waist up, a gown will be provided for you to wear during the test.

Results

An MCH Cardiologist will interpret the study and results will be given to your physician, who will recommend treatment if needed.
